This is a graduate course book in distributed systems primarily aimed at PhD students. The students preparing for PhD entrance will also get benefit from this text. This book covers the principles, advanced concepts, and technologies of distributed systems in detail, including: communication, replication, fault tolerance, and security. Intended for use in a senior/graduate level distributed systems course or by professionals, this text systematically shows how distributed systems are designed and implemented in real systems. It helps to understand the state of the art in operating systems and distributed systems, and how and why we got there, how to engage in systems research and to investigate novel ideas in systems through a semester-long research project.
